The Hungarian Association of Archeologists has proposed to the National Bank of Hungary that it should purchase the Seuso treasure, one of the most valuable artefacts ever found in Hungary, under its buyback scheme.
The central bank announced on Jan. 16 the launch of a 100-million-euro programme to buy back foreign-owned Hungarian artworks. The bank said everyone, even ordinary citizens, could make suggestions on potential purchases.

The association said on its website on Wednesday that the Seuso treasure, a set of ancient silver tableware believed to have been unearthed in western Hungary in the 1970s, would be most suitable to be targeted in the scheme. The late Roman-era bowls, trays and ewers most probably entered the international artworks market through mediators in the 1980s under complicated circumstances. The treasure was bought by Lord Northampton who offered it for sale in 2006, and a buyer did appear, but Hungary protested at the time, saying that under Hungarian law the Hungarian state was their rightful owner.
